Terrorism in Burkina Faso: 3 security incidents against mines in October 2022

The first two weeks of October 2022 were not favourable for the mining sector.

Three security incidents against industrial mines were recorded during this period in October 2022.

The Karma mine operated by the company Néré mining experienced two attacks during the period.

On 13 October 2022, a mine security vehicle was attacked by suspected terrorists. One person was killed, three people were abducted and a vehicle was set on fire.

On 6 October 2022, the suspected terrorists broke into the perimeter of the mine before firing on the facilities. A vehicle was set on fire by the attackers.

The second mine to experience a security incident was the Bouroum mine operated by Nordgold. On 3 October 2022, during an attack, four people were killed, including three Volunteers for the Defence of the Homeland (VDP) and a security guard working for a subcontractor of the mine. Significant material damage was recorded at the mine. The courtyard of the traditional chief, which houses the VDP headquarters, was also burnt down.

In addition to these incidents, almost all the mines are experiencing supply difficulties due to the risk of attacks on the access roads. To cope, the mines call on the army to secure the convoys. This situation leads to shortages of certain inputs and an increase in production costs.
