The transitional government of Burkina Faso has requisitioned 200 kg of gold produced by the company SEMAFO Burkina SA. The information was made public in an order issued by the Minister of Energy, Mines, and Quarries, Simon Pierre Boussim, on 14 February 2023. According to the terms of the decree, which is widely shared in the mining community and which Mines Actu was able to consult, the requisition is based on Article 16 of the Mining Code, which stipulates: “Mining or quarrying installations and extracted substances may not be requisitioned or expropriated by the State except for a reason of public necessity and in return for fair and prior compensation fixed by agreement between the parties or by an arbitration tribunal or by the common law.”

Following this requisition, the government will compensate the company in question. This compensation corresponds to the value of the gold.

The National Agency for the Supervision of Artisanal and Semi-Mechanised Mining (ANEEMAS) is the structure responsible for the execution of the ministerial order.

The reasons for this requisition have not yet been communicated. SEMAFO Burkina SA is a mining company operated by Endeavour Mining. The company has been in operation since 2008. In 2022, it produced 6.04 tonnes of gold.
