  • At least 3 tonnes of fish expected from this campaign
  • Through the construction of a water retention structure
  • Many varieties of fish expected in the 2023 season
  • In the name of Corporate Social Responsibility

As part of its Corporate Social Responsibility strategy, the IAMGOLD Essakane mining company is supporting the local population with fish production.

Fishing is an income-generating activity that creates real enthusiasm among fishermen. The income from the sale of fish helps to improve the living conditions of households. Furthermore, fishing federates and brings certain cohesion to the communities.

With this in mind, the Essakane mine has built a water reservoir to collect the excess water from the Gorouol River during periods of high water. It is through this reservoir that the mining company has initiated fish farming.

Thus, IAMGOLD Essakane has been able to create conditions for the communities living near the mine, namely those of Essakane site, Falagountou, Korizéna and Doumam, to practice fishing, in strict compliance with health and safety regulations.

Since 2012, these communities have come together in a spirit of conviviality and mutual respect to bring out impressive quantities of natural fish from the waters of the Burkinabe Sahel.

For the year 2023, the fishery started on 29 March and will last for at least 3 weeks. Many varieties of fish are involved in the fishery. These include sardines, mackerel, carp, catfish and eels.

For this campaign, at least 3 tons of fish are expected from this socio-economic activity, as the 2022 edition could not be held due to security issues. This fishing activity is carried out under the professional supervision of the water and forestry official, in accordance with the texts governing the matter.

The mine also congratulated the community leaders for their collaboration and encourages the fishermen in this spirit of brotherhood and solidarity.
