During the Council of Ministers meeting of 13 April 2023, the government adopted a decree for the Ministry of Energy, Mines and Quarries on the conditions for granting and renewing approval for the processing of mining waste in Burkina Faso.
According to the Minister of Mines, Simon-Pierre Boussim, this text codifies the treatment of mining waste which had not been taken into account in the legal arsenal governing the mining sector. “Waste is fine coals, slag, acidic concentrates, and ash that the processing of mines leads to waste. These rejects are often exported. This decree will make it possible to complete the legal vacuum that existed in terms of the treatment of mining waste,” said Minister Boussim.
As a reminder, since the end of 2019, a case of exporting fine coal for processing in Canada has appeared in the news.
