The local population of the Niankorodougou mine, operated by the company Wahgnion Gold, blocked the access roads to the mine this morning, 16 April 2023.
According to initial reports, the population is demanding the departure of a number of mine officials and their replacement by locals.
As a reminder, the mine’s activities had been blocked in January 2023. The population had demanded the satisfaction of a platform of some thirty points. A monitoring committee was set up to follow up on the implementation of these demands. This committee is made up of mine officials, the Ministries of Mines and Employment, local authorities, and leaders of the local population.
As of today, almost all the points had been satisfied. Among the points of dissatisfaction, the dismissal of the 7 managers, including the Director of Human Resources (DRH) and the Community Relations Officer.
Waghion Gold is located in the Leraba province in the Cascades region. The mine started operations with Endeavour Mining. It went into production in September 2019.
In 2020, the mine employed 564 people, including 471 Burkinabè. It produced 5.62 tonnes of gold and paid 19 billion CFAF in taxes in the same year.
