The security crisis in Burkina Faso is hampering the development of the mining sector. Indeed, 3 mining companies of the Avesoro group, namely Youga, Nétiana and the new Ouaré project, have been stopped since 30 January 2022. The Taparko mine has been shut down since 7 April 2022. This is also the case for Néeré Mining’s Karma mine, which has been idle since the attack on 9 June 2022. This state of affairs was communicated by the Ministry of Energy, Mines and Quarries during the first Ministerial Sector Management Board (CASEM) 2023, held on Thursday 13 April 2023. The theme of the CASEM was: “Impact of the security crisis on the activities of the extractive industries: issues, challenges and prospects”. For the minister, beyond these cases, the mines of Inata, Tambao, as well as the cement limestone project of Tin Hakoff cannot resume their activities if the security context does not improve. In total, 11 mines are stopped.
Despite these difficulties, the current situation is that there are 10 mines in operation, 2 under construction, 1 awaiting permits and 3 free permits ».
