The Congolese Press Agency (Agence congolaise de presse, ACP) announced on Sunday 11 June 2023 that the company Congo Gold will launch gold processing activities in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) in July. The announcement was made on Saturday 10 June 2023 at the Ministry of Mines, following an audience granted by the Minister of Mines to a delegation from the company.

Indeed, the Minister of Mines, Antoinette N’samba Kalambay, gave the green light to Congo Gold to process the gold locally, following discussions on this issue.

Congo Gold’s Bukavu-based gold refinery will be inaugurated at the end of July.

Gold processing represents an opportunity for the country to promote the development of its natural resources in the hope of deriving maximum benefit from them. It will enable raw gold to be transformed into ingots. The almost 1,200 m2 plant has the capacity to process 200 kg of gold a day and 2 tonnes a month at a very high grade.

The Minister for Industry had hinted that the refinery would receive government support to ensure the success of the project.

Before this refinery was built, all the mineral resources produced on a massive scale in the east and north-east of the DRC were processed outside the country, in particular in Uganda, which has a plant of the same type.

As a reminder, the gold refining plant project started in 2019 and will be completed 4 years later, notes the ACP.
