A delegation from Taparko Mine Company (Société Mine de Taparko, SOMITA) was received by the Minister of Energy, Mines and Quarries, Simon-Pierre Boussim, on 26 June 2023. The purpose of the meeting was to present the Minister with the plan to reopen the SOMITA mine.
A delegation from Taparko Mine Company (SOMITA), led by its Managing Director, Oumar Barra, was granted an audience with Simon-Pierre Boussim, Minister of Energy, Mines and Quarries. The purpose of the audience was to explain the plan to reopen the mine to the senior official in charge of mines, and at the same time to seek his support and advice.
“We were pleasantly surprised to learn that the ministry in charge of mines shares our joy at the reopening of Taparko. We are grateful for the warm welcome we received this evening,” said Lamine Traoré, SOMITA’s Country Business Director, as he left the audience. According to him, it is a great encouragement for his company and a comfort in his position.
As a reminder, the Taparko mine has been closed since April 2022. The mine was operated by the Nordgold group. The closure of the mine represented a loss of revenue for the government of Burkina Faso, which was receiving many billion euros a year from the taxes paid by the company. SOMITA is currently owned by Sky Gold Ressources.
In 2021 and 2022, during the first 9 months, SOMITA produced an average of 2 tonnes of gold.
