- Around 150 billion FCFA to be paid in taxes by 2022
- Against 180 billion FCFA paid in 2021
- A decrease of 12.3% compared to 2021
The Loulo-Gounkoto mine, a subsidiary of Canada’s Barrick, is Mali’s largest gold mine. In 2022, it produced 684,000 ounces of gold and paid 263 million dollars (around 150 billion FCFA) to the Malian government in taxes and mining royalties. According to the tax report published by Barrick, this represents a 12.3% drop on the 300 million dollars paid in 2021 (around 180 billion FCFA).
The reasons for this drop have not been explained. However, they could be linked to the fall in production, as mining royalties and certain taxes are calculated on the basis of income from the sale of production. In fact, production was down by 2% on the previous year.
