Kamoto Copper Company S.A. (KCC) and Mutanda Mining SARL (MUMI) are Glencore subsidiaries based in the Lualaba province of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). KCC and MUMI are both large-scale industrial producers of copper and cobalt. On 29 June 2023, they held a community general meeting in Kolwezi to promote dialogue with local stakeholders.

For Glencore, strong and respectful engagement with stakeholders is essential if its industrial assets are to retain their licence to operate. Community town hall meetings are one of the engagement platforms available to communities to voice their concerns and provide feedback to companies. Local employment, investment in social infrastructure, support for local businesses and performance in health, safety, environment, social performance and human rights (HSEC and HR) were the main topics discussed at the public meeting.
Clint Donkin, Director of Glencore Copper Africa, said: “We are proud of the open, constructive and ongoing engagement with stakeholders at our KCC and MUMI operations. We seek to build relationships with local communities and decision-making authorities to share information about our operations and to help us understand their views and address their concerns. This was an important event for us to listen and share ideas with stakeholders and to reaffirm our commitment to addressing potential grievances, complaints and unresolved concerns.”
As a reminder, Glencore has been present in the DRC since 2008. Glencore Copper Africa operates two industrial copper and cobalt mines: KCC, in partnership with Gécamines; and MUMI, in which the DRC government holds a 5% stake. Both operations are located near Kolwezi in Lualaba province.
