A delegation from Malian civil society, which sits on the Steering Committee of Mali’s Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative (EITI), is visiting Burkina Faso from 13 to 18 August 2023 on a study tour. Led by Abdoul Wahab Diakité, the delegation is seeking inspiration from Burkina Faso’s experience with the Local Development Mining Fund (LDMF). The members of the delegation held a working session on 14 August 2023 with Burkina Faso civil society, which sits on the EITI Burkina Faso steering committee. During the meeting, the Malian side was briefed on the role of Burkina Faso civil society in the operationalisation of the LDMF. Indeed, civil society has led an advocacy campaign that has helped overcome the reluctance of some stakeholders. Civil society continues to play an important role in monitoring the collection, distribution and use of LDMF resources. Since the LDMF became operational in 2019 until the end of 2022, Burkina Faso has collected 169 billion FCFA. According to Abdoul Wahab Diakité, the delegation will draw inspiration from Burkina Faso’s best practices and implement them in Mali.
