The opening ceremony of the 5th edition of the West African Mining Week (Semaine de l’Activité minière en Afrique de l’Ouest – SAMAO) took place on 28 September 2023 in Ouagadougou. The theme of SAMAO is “Mining in Africa: What strategy for impacting local economies?” The opening ceremony was attended by Prime Minister Apollinaire Kyélem, the President of the Transitional Legislative Assembly, Dr Ousmane Bougouma, and presidents of institutions, among others.
Simon-Pierre Boussim, Minister of Energy, Mines and Quarries, read the address by the Head of State, Captain Ibrahim Traoré. He said that holding this event was a sign of Burkina Faso’s resilience.
He pointed out that the transitional government is resolutely committed to ensuring that the population benefits from the advantages of mining, hence the reforms undertaken in the sector.
Captain Ibrahim Traoré expressed the hope that this year’s event would provide a forum for reflection on how to improve the impact of mining on local economies.
Following the official opening ceremony, Prime Minister Apollinaire Kyélem cut the ribbon before visiting the exhibition stands.
