On 23 and 24 November 2023, the Ministry of Energy, Mines and Quarries is organising the Cut Laterite Bricks (Briques latérites taillées – BLT) Promotion Day in Dano, in the South-West region. The aim of the day is to promote cut laterite bricks throughout the country, in order to stimulate interest in building with BLT.
With the theme “Artisanal exploitation of cut lateritic bricks: what mechanisms for better valorisation?”, this day aims essentially to present the different BLT products to the general public, to show the investment opportunities linked to BLT, to encourage local authorities to use BLT in the construction of different infrastructures, to encourage the population to use BLT and to offer a better visibility to the exploitation of BLT.

The opening ceremony took place in the courtyard of Dano town hall.
The president of the special delegation of the commune of Dano opened the series of speeches at the ceremony. He said that Burkina Faso had enormous quarry resources, but that they were little known to the public. He hoped that this day would help to find ways and means of promoting and developing cut laterite bricks.
“My department is convinced that the development of the quarrying sector will create thousands of decent jobs and develop the country’s economy,” said Simon-Pierre Boussim, Minister of Energy, Mines and Quarries, in a speech read by Boureima Sawadogo, Governor of the South-West region.
The UNDP was represented by Clarisse Coulibally. She explained that her institution is leading a pilot project to promote and support players involved in the development minerals sector, such as BLTs. The project is worth around 210 million FCFA and covers 5 communes: Dono, Toussiana, Tiebelé, Toecé and Tielba.
Certificates of appreciation were presented to the chairmen of the special delegations of the communes of Dano and Houndé for their commitment to promoting BLT.
During the 2 days dedicated to BLT, a number of activities will be taking place, including presentations of papers, meetings and exchanges with stakeholders, a fair to raise awareness of BLT, a visit to a BLT production site and a popular cross-country race to strengthen social cohesion.
