Celebrating excellence and performance are among the reasons for the second edition of the Promotional Days on Occupational Health and Safety and Environmental Protection in the operations of the Fortuna Silver Mines group’s Roxgold Sanu mine. Opened on Friday 24 November 2023 on the Bagassi site, it was also an opportunity for the mine to present the Fortuna Silver Mines group’s performance report and to gather recommendations for better management. Dubbed “HSE Days”, the event will run for 48 hours, from 23 to 24 November 2023. Lee-Anne Hermann, Canadian Ambassador to Burkina Faso and special guest at the 2nd HSE Days.
Roxgold Sanu is a socially responsible mining company
According to Ousmane Bawar, Director of the Office of the Minister for the Environment, Roxgold Sanu is a socially responsible mining company, because “everything it does is based on sustainability. As well as the business aspect, the mine takes the social aspect into account”. As proof of this, he points to the 2nd edition of the “HSE-Days”.
He notes that the mine complies with a number of environmental protection indicators. As a result, he says that Roxgold Sanu is playing its part in respecting the principles of sustainable development laid down at national and international level. Ousmane Bawar also called on Roxgold Sanu to improve its performance. He called on other mining companies to follow in the footsteps of the Fortuna Silver Mines subsidiary.
The High Commissioner of the Bale province, Ibrahim Boly, represented the Governor of the Boucle du Mouhoun region at the event. He pointed out that the Roxgold Sanu mine, in addition to the Local Development Mining Fund (LDMF), is also supporting the Bagassi commune and surrounding communes in a number of projects. At the same time, he added that the mine had placed an order for the purchase of a state-of-the-art incinerator for the Boromo medical centre.
Lee-Anne Hermann, Canada’s Ambassador to Burkina Faso and guest of honour at the 2nd “HSE Days”, was delighted with the way the mine was operating. She noted the good cooperation between mine workers and local residents, and the application of health and safety and environmental protection regulations. “Roxgold Sanu is a very good example of what a mining company can do and is doing here in Burkina Faso”.
The opening of 02 open-cast mines is on the agenda
Philibert Sawadogo, Head of the Health, Safety and Sustainable Development Department at Roxgold Sanu, said that the 2nd “HSE Days” were a springboard for the mine to rally its team around a single objective and present the performance report of Fortuna Silver Mines, the parent company of Roxgold Sanu. Philibert Sawadogo indicated that the opening ceremony was also an opportunity for the mine to gather proposals from various entities.
He also mentioned that Roxgold Sanu is certified ISO 14 001 for the environment and ISO 45 001 for occupational health and safety. The head of the Health, Safety and Sustainable Development department noted that the mine is planning to open 02 open-pit mines, one in 2024 and the other in 2026. He also mentioned the updating of the mine’s rehabilitation programme.
In addition to the opening ceremony, the programme includes a stand visit and a ceremony to reward the best Roxgold Sanu agents and departments for their exemplary work.
