Adopted on 07 November 2023 by its Steering Committee (Comité de Pilotage – COPIL), the 13th report of the Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative in Burkina Faso (EITI-BF) was submitted to the government by the Minister of the Economy, Finance and Forecasting (MEFP) on 30 November 2023. The report, which covers the 2021 financial year, includes recommendations for greater transparency in the mining sector.

“The extractive industries contribute 20% of tax revenues and play a very important role in job creation,” said Dr Aboubacar Nacanabo, Minister of the Economy, Finance and Forward Planning, after receiving the EITI-BF 2021 report. He said: “I am very pleased to receive this report, which shows that transparency in the extractive industry is a reality in Burkina Faso”.

At the same time, he noted that the recommendations made in the report would be analysed and taken into account to improve transparency in the mining industry, which is a key sector for the national economy.

For the Chairman of the EITI-BF Steering Committee, Nicolas Kobiané, this presentation session is an opportunity for the Steering Committee to express its gratitude to the government, which has always been committed to the EITI-BF. He noted that the adoption of this report meets a twofold need, namely to satisfy the requirements of the EITI standard and also to keep the government and the public informed of credible information on the extractive sector. Nicolas Kobiane reports that despite the difficult security situation, mining sector statistics increased in 2021.

The total quantity of gold (artisanal and industrial) produced in 2021 is estimated at 67.13 tonnes, compared with 63.02 tonnes in 2020, an increase of 6.52%, equivalent to 4.11 tonnes. In terms of revenue, the Chairman of the EITI-BF Steering Committee reports that it reached 318.98 billion FCFA in 2021, contributing 19.25% of total revenue and 14.34% of gross domestic product (GDP).
