According to the International Monetary Fund (IMF), Mauritania’s economic growth will accelerate between now and 2025. Thanks to the start-up of the Grand Tortue Ahmeyim (GTA) gas project, the growth rate will reach 14% in 2025.
The IMF estimates that Mauritania’s economic growth should reach 5.1% in 2024 before rising to 14.3% in 2025, thanks to the start of production from the GTA gas field straddling the maritime border with Senegal.
“We expect production from the GTA field to start in the first half of 2024 and natural gas exports to begin in the second half. This will make a positive contribution to GDP growth from 2024 onwards,” said Felix Fischer, head of the expert mission sent to Mauritania by the IMF at the end of October 2023.
“We are forecasting economic growth of 14.3% in 2025, when gas exports will account for 11.6% of the country’s total exports,” he added.
Operated by BP and Kosmos Energy, the GTA project is expected to produce 2.5 million tonnes of liquefied natural gas per year in an initial phase. According to the two companies’ forecasts, production volumes should then rise to 5 million tonnes a year in 2027 and 10 million tonnes from 2030 onwards.
However, Mauritania is also set to consolidate its position as a rising gas power in the coming years, thanks to the exploitation of the Bir Allah field. The reserves of this gas field are located exclusively in Mauritanian territorial waters.
