- They denounce the illegal nature
- For them, the only legitimate authority to lead these discussions is the contested Director General
- Safety measures are in place to ensure that mine and subcontractor employees can work safely.
- Any employee who is unable to return to work must notify Human Resources.
Activities at the Houndé Gold mine have been at a standstill since the morning of Sunday 21 January 2024. Minesactu.info was informed that yesterday, Monday 22 January 2024, Endeavour mining raised its voice. Indeed, David Dragone, executive vice-president of human resources and communications, and Mark Morcombe, executive vice-president and director of operations, sent a memo entitled “Work stoppage without notice at the Houndé mine” to the mine’s employees, with a copy to the mine’s management and staff representatives.
Here’s what the memo says.
Dear Colleagues, Since 21 January 2024, the management of Endeavour Mining has observed an unannounced work stoppage by certain employees at the Houndé mine, resulting in a stoppage of operations. To date, the management of the Houndé mine (HGO) has not officially received any list of demands or claims that would allow it to enter into negotiations. HGO management has indicated its willingness to enter into discussions with employee representatives with a view to finding a positive outcome to the situation. However, in view of the refusal expressed by staff representatives to hold talks with the mine’s managing director, this approach has not been successful. We would like to remind you that the only legitimate authority to lead these discussions and work towards fair solutions for all parties involved is the General Manager of the mine. No outcome can be reached without his direct involvement. Although we respect the concerns that led to the initiation of this work stoppage, we would like to remind you of its illegal nature. It took place without observing the relevant legal formalities, and the occupation of the various access routes into the site in such a way as to prevent workers from reaching their workstations constitutes a reprehensible act.
In order to ensure a rapid resumption of activities, management has taken the necessary safety measures to ensure that all employees and subcontractors can return to their jobs safely and without risk from the morning of 23 January 2024. Any employee who is prevented from returning to his or her workstation is asked to inform Human Resources immediately. We encourage open dialogue, mutual respect and collaboration to find solutions that address the concerns of each and every one of you. Let’s get back to work and work together towards constructive solutions.
