Civil Society is organising Alternative Mining Indaba (#AMI2024) from 5 to 8 February 2024, at the Double Tree Hilton, Cape Town, South Africa in conjunction with the Investing in African Mining Indaba. The theme of #AMI2024 is “Minerals of the Energy Transition: Communities First for an Inclusive and Feminist Future”.
Alternative Mining Indaba is a global platform that brings together a range of stakeholders each year to discuss a variety of issues. It serves as a tool for community empowerment and training. The platform focuses on critical monitoring of extractive industries and host countries by communities, with the support of civil society organisations, in order to preserve and care for future generations.
AMI2024 will be attended by at least 300 participants from NGOs, community organisations, academics, journalists, young people, women, etc. from several countries.
As a reminder, at the end of #AMI2023, held under the theme “A just energy transition: unleashing the potential and participation of the community”, the platform reiterated its determination that “people first, profits later”. An unwavering commitment to a true people-centred society with fundamental traditions of sharing. #AMI2024 should accelerate this call, with a positive response to the question of inclusivity and firmly place the feminist agenda in the discourse. It is for this reason that #AMI2024 will promote the creation of a safe and inclusive space for diverse stakeholders (communities affected by mining, religious leaders, civil society, social justice advocates) to interact with the extractive industries. It intends to promote feminist principles by emphasising the importance of gender equality, inclusiveness and intersectionality in African mining discourse in order to end the marginalisation of women. “Defending women’s rights is not only a matter of ethics, but also a catalyst for better decision-making, sustainable practices and equitable development within the mining industry,” according to the organisers. It will also promote a better understanding of the specific challenges faced by women in communities affected by mining, recognising that a feminist perspective is essential to creating sustainable change. AMI2024 aims to contribute to the empowerment of communities by equipping them with essential knowledge related to the mining sector, the transition to just green energy and feminist perspectives. Finally, it aims to strengthen solidarity between participants, highlighting the importance of aligning efforts and perspectives to amplify a unified voice for transformative change.
