Tax Justice Network Africa will join civil society, activists, mining-affected communities, religious organisations, the private sector and government representatives at the Alternative Mining Indaba (AMI) to be held from 5 to 7 February 2024 in Cape Town, South Africa.
The Alternative Mining Indaba is a global safe space for stakeholders to discuss, debate, highlight and show solidarity with those affected and impacted by the extractive industries, in particular mining.
This year’s theme is “Minerals for Energy Transition: Putting Communities First for an Inclusive Feminist Future”. The 2024 AMI should build on the resolution taken at the 2023 AMI, which emphasised putting “people first, not profits”. This means a firm commitment to a truly people-centred society, rooted in the fundamental values of sharing. In addition, the 2024 AMI should address the issue of inclusiveness in a positive way and firmly integrate the feminist agenda into the progressive discourse.
As part of this programme, TJNA will co-organise a session with the Tax Justice Network (TJN) at AMI 2024 to discuss tax justice and the climate crisis in resource-rich African countries, with discussions on using taxation as a tool to tackle inequality in the context of the climate crisis in resource-rich African countries by building on intergovernmental discussions on international taxation and regional integration. and cooperation. This includes domesticating the African Mining Vision and the African Continental Free Trade Area and creating a strategy for the future of minerals needed for the energy transition.
