Energy transition in Africa: How can the fight against corruption benefit women and communities?

Natural Resource Governance Institute (#NRGI) is taking part in #Alternative_Indaba_Mining_2024 (#AMI2024), which is being held from 5 to 8 February 2024 in Cape Town, South Africa. Tomorrow, 6 February 2024, the NGO will be hosting a workshop on the theme “Energy transition in Africa: How the fight against corruption can benefit women and communities?”.

For #NRGI, the energy transition requires more minerals than fossil fuel-based systems to scale up low-carbon infrastructure to combat climate change. The explosion in demand for these minerals will increase the likelihood of corruption and disproportionately impact marginalised groups; women and young people. Many transitional mineral reserves are also located in countries with governance problems. This means that governments, watchdogs and the climate community must take decisive action now to ensure the sustainable development of their economies and, in particular, tackle the growing risks of corruption in transition minerals supply chains and mitigate the impacts on lives and livelihoods.

Aimed at members of civil society, youth, women, community and faith groups working in the mining sector, this workshop aims to improve participants’ knowledge of the link between just energy transition, corruption, gender and the Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative standard, provide participants with information and skills to improve the quality of their interventions and positively influence the transparent management of transition minerals in their communities. The panel will be moderated by Nafi Chinery, Africa Director, Tengi Georges-Iloli, NRGI Nigeria Senior Officer and Silas Olang, Africa Transition Advisor.

The NRGI experts will be joined by representatives of the Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative (#ITIE).
