Since 20 November 2022, Maïmouna Guembré/ Ouédraogo has taken up her new position as Mine Closure Specialist at Endeavour Mining company. Mine closure specialist means ‘Spécialiste en réhabilitation et fermeture des mines’ in French.

Who is Maïmouna Guembré? The first female metallurgist in Burkina Faso, she is a metallurgical engineer from the Ecole des Mines de Nancy. She also holds a Master’s degree in fundamental and applied geology from the University of Nancy I. Maïmouna has many years of experience in heap leaching and metallurgical testing. She was in charge of the processing plant of the first mine in Essakane and then in charge of the “bottle roll” section of the ABILAB laboratory of the ALS CHEMEX group.

She also held the position of Deputy General Manager of Gryphon Minerals Burkina, which holds the licence for the Waghion gold mine. She retained this position until her recent appointment. Gryphon Minerals Burkina was in turn bought by Teranga Gold and then by Endeavour Mining.

In community life, Maï, as her colleagues call her, is the vice-president of the Burkina Faso Association of Mining Women (AFEMIB), a member of Women In Mining.

After her appointment, she published this message: “This publication is tangible proof that the mining industry and all the people it impacts, from the mine workers to the end consumers and the host communities of the mines, are better off because women are always going the extra mile to contribute to this well-being, and to ensure that this sector of activity participates in the best possible way in sustainable development, for a better world”.
