• Endeavour Mining supports the call for urgent support on climate change at COP27.
• Endeavour Mining Group plays a key role in the fight against climate change.
November 11: Abidjan, Ivory Coast – Endeavour Mining is proud to have joined the African Business Leaders Coalition (ABLC) in calling on the international community, meeting in Sharm el-Sheikh for the United Nations Climate Change Conference COP27, to provide urgent support to solve the key climate issues facing Africa.
The ABLC is a CEO-led initiative of 56 African companies from a wide range of sectors. As part of the UN Global Compact for Africa’s 2021-2023 strategy, it aims to advance Africa’s growth, prosperity and sustainable development by mobilising Africa’s leading companies to actively engage in solving the continent’s most pressing challenges.
In its statement on climate at COP27, ABLC noted that Africa is among the most vulnerable and least prepared regions in the world to adapt to the growing climate crisis. ABLC believes that action against the effects of the climate crisis – such as food insecurity, forced displacement, water scarcity and new diseases – can only be truly achieved through collaboration and support, including financial support, from the private sector and the international community.
Sébastien de Montessus, Chief Executive Officer of Endeavour Mining, said: « Nowhere are the effects of climate change more apparent than in Africa. Endeavour is acutely aware of its responsibility to protect our environment, while playing a key role in tackling climate change on a wider level. We aim to achieve zero emissions by 2050 and reduce our emissions intensity by 30 per cent by 2030 for Scope 1 and 2, through a number of initiatives including renewable and solar energy technologies. »
« We are delighted to be part of ABLC and alongside our fellow members, we believe we can help enable an equitable and just transition in Africa by addressing the social effects of climate change at a number of levels within our communities. These include our initiatives to ensure a clean water supply, our efforts to prevent disease through our malaria reduction campaigns, the development of renewable energy sources for our communities, such as the one we are working on in Burkina Faso, and the continued provision of employment and educational opportunities for those living and working around our mines. »
« Through our membership of the ABLC, we hope to play a significant role in helping Africa, and in particular the countries in which we operate, to address the challenges of climate change and ultimately gain much needed support from international partners. »
As part of the ABLC Climate Declaration, the Coalition has committed to a series of key actions to achieve the goals of the Paris Agreement and support Africa’s just transition to a 1.5°C future to build a prosperous continent anchored by a resilient, green and competitive economy. These include:
• Participation in the UN Global Compact and adherence to its ten principles in business practices and with suppliers and customers.
• Developing robust corporate resilience plans to improve adaptive capacity.
• Adhering to the Just Transition guiding principles, which are at the heart of members’ climate action and advocacy.
• Setting corporate targets to significantly increase the share of renewable energy in the company’s energy consumption and contribute to the continental ambition of 27% renewable energy production by 2030.
