The Australian company West African Resources Limited, which operates the Sanbrado mine, has announced good prospects. It has intercepted new zones of strong gold mineralisation not far from the mine. In a release issued on 10 January 2022, West African Resources announced “high grade gold mineralisation from ongoing diamond drilling at the MV3 East prospect, located 6km from our Sanbrado gold operation in Burkina Faso”. Sanbrado is located about 100km from Ouaga, on the Ouaga-Fada axis, in the commune of Boudry, Ganzourgou province.

West African’s executive chairman, Richard Hyde, commented: “Drilling has intercepted new zones of gold mineralisation, including 20.5m at 2.98g/t gold at 192m depth. The extension of the high grade southern zone now extends over 200m and remains open at depth and to the south.

He announced at the time that a virgin mineral resource at other sites will be released later in the first quarter of 2023, along with the annual resource and reserve update. The update will include a 10-year production forecast and production and cost projections for 2023. With these findings, West African Resources is entering a significant growth phase with the objective of becoming a 400,000+ oz per annum gold producer by 2025.

Discovery highlights:

  • The zone of interest MV3 East is located 6 km northwest of Sanbrado.
  • Drilling intercepted high grade gold at MV3 East including;
  • 20.5m at 2.98g/t gold
  • 16m at 2.88 g/t gold
  • 21m at 2.16 g/t gold
  • 12m at 2.02 g/t gold

As a reminder, the Burkinabe State represented by its then Minister of Mines Idani Oumarou signed on 22 July 2019 in Ouagadougou, a mining convention with the Société des mines de Sanbrado (Somisa SA) for the exploitation of the Sanbrado mine. Somisa SA is a subsidiary of West African Resources Limited.

Oumarou Idani announced today that the exploitation of Sanbrado will generate 563 direct jobs, 4,000 indirect jobs, revenue for the state budget and a contribution to the local development mining fund of 4.860 billion FCFA. Will these various contributions increase with these new discoveries?
