- Production was 66.858 tonnes in 2021
- Down by 9,183 tonnes compared to 2021
- Representing a 13.7% decrease
- Production stoppages at several mines are thought to be the main cause
- The ounce of gold stood at 1,794.2 US dollars in December 2022
Between January and December 2022, Burkina Faso’s total fine gold production was 57.675 tonnes.
According to the General Directorate of Economy and Planning (DGEP), which provides these statistics in the report on the monitoring of economic and development indicators, this production is down by 9.183 tonnes, representing a rate of 13.7% compared to the same period in 2022.
Still according to the DGEP, this drop in gold production in 2022 is explained by the cessation of production by the mining companies SOMITA, SAMTENGA and BMC.
What about gold production in December 2022? During the month of December 2022, industrial gold production increased by 0.7%.
It increased from 5.358 tonnes in November 2022 to 5.396 tonnes in December 2022.

Compared to December 2021, it is down by 7.3%.
“In quarterly variation, gold production increased by 6.2% to reach 14,024 tonnes in the fourth quarter of 2022”, according to the DGEP.
This fall in production is compensated by the good performance of the gold price. In December 2022, the price of an ounce of gold rose by 4.0% compared to November 2022, reaching 1,794.2 US dollars. On a year-on-year basis, the price of an ounce of gold is down by 0.3%. The ounce of gold recorded an average price of 1,728.4 US dollars in the fourth quarter of 2022, down by 0.1% compared to the previous quarter. The level of the gold price remains high in line with the uncertainties in the global economy.
