Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative (EITI): Togo temporarily suspended

0

The Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative (EITI) has suspended Togo since 1 January 2023. The main reason is the failure to publish the 2020 report on time, i.e. by 31 December 2022.

“Togo cannot claim an extension of the reporting deadline for the fiscal year from 1 January 2020 to 31 December 2020. The deadline for publication of the pending report remains 31 December 2022. In accordance with Article 7, Section 4 of the EITI Standard, Togo is temporarily suspended,” the EITI Administration Board said in a statement. Togo is not eligible for an extension of the EITI reporting deadline of 1 February 2023. This suspension is temporary. It will be automatically lifted if the report is published within 6 months of the reporting deadline.

The EITI is an international initiative whose mission is to promote transparency and good governance in the extractive sector. Member countries establish a tripartite framework consisting of government, extractive companies, and civil society. Each year, member countries publish a reconciliation report of government data on the sector. This data is compared with the extractive companies to highlight discrepancies. If the discrepancy is not significant, the management of the sector is qualified as transparent.

Togo joined the EITI in 2013 and has committed to publishing various types of information each year in a public report.
