Your online media Mine_actu_Burkina cannot stay away from this celebration. On the occasion of the celebration of women, on 8 March 2023, it is proposing a series of articles on the theme “Gender in the mining sector”. The articles will be published throughout March 2023 in the form of reports on good practices, analyses, interviews and portraits of women in the mining sector.
As a reminder, in 1977 the United Nations made 8 March official as International Women’s Day. This day has its origins in the history of workers’ struggles and women’s demonstrations at the turn of the 20th century in North America and Europe.
In fact, it was in 1909 that the United States, under the impetus of American socialist women, decided to organise a “National Women’s Day” every year on the last Sunday in February to celebrate equal civil rights.
It was at the Second International Conference of Socialist Women in Copenhagen in 1910 that Clara Zetkin, a German journalist and activist, called on “socialist women of all countries” to organise an annual International Women’s Day. It was celebrated from 19 March 1911 in Austria, Germany, Denmark and Switzerland.
