  • There are 832 of them
  • Out of a total of 10,105 employees
  • According to the EITI-2020 report

The mining sector has a low presence of women in its workforce. The low presence of women in the sector and particularly in certain positions is a reality in direct and indirect employment.

According to the 2020 report of the Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative (EITI-BF) in Burkina Faso, of the 17 mining companies included in the reconciliation scope, 16 companies have declared details of their workforce. These 16 companies employed 10,105 women in 2020. It appears that the majority of the workforce, i.e. 93.41%, are nationals. However, out of the total of 10,105 employees, there were 832 women, representing 8.23% of the workforce.

Analysis of the data in the EITI-BF-2020 report indicates that the mining company IAMGOLD Essakane SA, with 282 women, has the most women in its workforce, estimated at 2,611 employees, representing a percentage of 10.80% women. Esssakane employs 33.9% of the women in the sector.

The Sanbrado Mining Company employs 103 women out of 447 employees, which is a 23.04% female ratio in the mine workforce. The female workforce at the other mines is as follows: Wahgnion Gold operation SA 9.92%, Houndé Gold 9.62%, Semafo Boungou 4.09%, Bissa Gold SA, 3.85%, Roxgold 1.81%, etc. As a reminder, Article 102 of the 2015 Mining Code obliges mining title or authorisation holders, their suppliers and their subcontractors to give priority to employing Burkinabè managers with the skills required for the efficient conduct of mining operations, with equal qualifications and without distinction as to gender. Unfortunately, the texts implementing this provision of the Mining Code have not yet been adopted.
