SOMISA Mine: Resumption of work on 17 March 2023 after 10 days of blockage

Activities at the Sanbrado Mining Company (SOMISA) effectively resumed this morning, March 17, 2023.

The mine’s activities have been suspended since March 8, 2023 due to a strike by workers. The information was given by an internal source and confirmed by a senior official of the Ministry of Mines who is there in search of a solution.

Indeed, the meeting that some of the staff delegates had with the Minister of Mines on 16 March 2023 had something to do with it. According to the internal source, immediately after this meeting, a delegation composed of agents of the Ministry (General Inspection of Mines and Technical Councils) went to the site in the afternoon of 16 March 2023 to operationalise the resumption of activities.

The resumption of activities was facilitated by the promise of involvement of the Minister of Mines in the resolution of the crisis.

The urgent need in this situation is to establish a framework for frank dialogue between the parties. The ministerial side was surprised, for example, to learn that the staff representatives and the mine administration are hardly concerned with each other.

These officials include people who have been dismissed by other miners for inadequate management. Testimonies about the difficulties of collaboration between the mine’s top management and the workers are surprising.
