The Burkinabe government has sold the state assets of the Tambao manganese mine and the Inata gold mine to the Turkish company Afro Turk. The amount of this transfer, 30 billion FCFA, of which 28 billion FCFA for Tambao and 2 billion FCFA for Inata. The deed of transfer was signed on 25 April 2023 at the end of a contract signing ceremony between Simon Pierre Boussim, Ministry of Energy, Mines and Quarries, assisted by Aboubakar Nacanabo, from the Ministry of Economy, Finance and Prospective, and on the other hand Savas Balcik, CEO of Afro Turk.

As a reminder, it was on 01 March 2023 that the Council of Ministers authorised these transfers to the company Afro Turk.

At the end of the signing ceremony of the transfer contract, Minister Simon Pierre Boussim did not miss the opportunity to underline that the signing of the contract does not authorise the Turkish companies to exploit the two mines. The contract is only a step. The 2 companies must submit applications for operating permits in accordance with the mining code. The 2 companies will become the owners of these mining assets once the operating licences have been granted. He urged the partners to respect the terms of the contract, notably the securing of the area and the development of infrastructure.

According to Simon Pierre Boussim, a mine in operation benefits the Burkinabe economy in many ways, notably in terms of budgetary revenue, revenue for the community, employment, etc. On the issue of security, the Minister of Mines said that these companies have been asked to build bases for the defence and security forces on these mining sites.

“This is a way of contributing to the resolution of the crisis we are experiencing because we believe that these companies have the skills to help us, as they are experienced in mining in other countries,” he concluded. Afro Turk has been in the extractive resources business since 1938.
