- A work developed by TS Solutions Mining Sarl
- 90% manual scaling is done after blasting
- 60% of deaths in underground mines are related to ground conditions
The activity related to the extractive industry is not without risk for the personnel working in underground mines. Aware of all these risks, the TS Solutions Mining Sarl Underground Mining Training Centre has prepared a 27-page booklet entitled “Scaling and the adventures of Moussa the miner” to guide the scaling activity and prevent risks. The presentation of the booklet took place on 12 May 2023 in Ouagadougou during a launching ceremony. The presentation ceremony of the booklet mobilised many actors of the extractive sector.

Rock scaling is an important operation in the mining industry. It consists of probing the walls of underground mine corridors with a steel rod in order to detect unstable rocks and, if necessary, to detach them. The presentation of the document was made by the Managing Director of TS Solutions, Mining Jacques Tremblay. In his presentation, he explained some of the steps in the underground mining process. He mentioned certain aspects such as engineering and research by the geologist, drilling follow-up, blasting, etc. According to him, blasting causes vibrations that weaken the rock, hence the need to lay wire mesh and anchor cables. The weakening of the rock after blasting gives all its meaning to scaling. According to Jacques Tremblay, 90% of manual scaling is done after blasting. “It should also be noted that about 60% of deaths in underground mines are related to ground conditions,” he added.

The manual on scaling gives the basic rules to be known by anyone working underground.

As a reminder, TS Solutions Mining was established in 2012, and its main activities are mining consulting, mining training, and recruitment.
