The international community is celebrating International Women in Mining Day on 15 June. Profile and qualifications
A graduate of the School of Mining, Industry and Geology in Niger, Fourera Sotty Maïga joined the Akouta Mining Company (Compagnie Minière d’Akouta, COMINAK) directly as a laboratory assistant testing the low-grade ore leaching process. She moved on to take up the position of Environment and Safety Correspondent at the uranium processing plant. In 2009, she joined the SUP de CO business school in La Rochelle and the IAE business school in Poitiers, France, for a double postgraduate diploma in Sustainable Development Strategy and a Master’s degree in Law, Economics and Management, specialising in Sustainable Development Management. This course of study took her to AREVA (now ORANO MINING) headquarters at La Défense in Paris as an Environment and Project Studies Engineer. From 2013 to 2022, she was Environment and Sustainable Development Manager at the Compagnie Miniere d’Akouta COMINAK (ORANO MINING Group in Niger), where she was in charge of community projects, sponsorship and support for local development in the communities where the COMINAK industrial site is located, in Arlit in northern Niger.
In addition to its professional activities, Fourera carries out missions to improve the working and living conditions of women in the mining, oil and gas sectors in Niger and West Africa.
Fourera now has some twenty years’ experience and expertise in the mining sector.

She was featured on the cover of “le Journal de l’expert” magazine in March 2022 for the month covering International Women’s Day, Woman of the Week by the Diaspora Niger website in February 2022, Selected as one of the TOP 10 Women to Watch in the Mining and Energy Sector by Insights Success magazine, August 2021 Edition, Selected as one of the TOP 100 Most Inspirational Women in Mining Worldwide by Women In Mining UK in November 2019.
