- It ranks 31st out of 50 in 2023
- Up from 37th place in 2022, a rise of 6 places
- Renewable energy companies dominate the 2023 list
Since 2002, Corporate Knights has published a ranking of the 50 best corporate citizens in Canada. This is a ranking of public and private companies with a turnover of more than 1 billion dollars. The ranking is based on 25 key performance indicators (KPIs) to assess how companies manage their resources, employees and finances in relation to their peer group. Corporate Knights is known for its transparent, quantitative methodology that places equal emphasis on the ESG (environmental, social and governance) performance of a company’s operations and the environmental impact of its commodities.
The 2023 rankings were published on 28 June 2023. In this 2023 ranking, IAMGOLD is ranked 31st in 2023 compared with 37th in 2022, an improvement of six places on last year.
This ranking prompted a response from Oumar Toguyeni, Senior Vice President, External Affairs and Sustainable Development: “At IAMGOLD, we believe that our Zero Harm approach is not a goal, but a journey. Our goal is to continue to strive for the highest ESG standards and to continually improve our practices as we tackle the new social and environmental challenges of our time.” “Recognition as one of Canada’s 2023 Best Corporate Citizens in 50 is a testament to our unwavering commitment to responsible mining and strong governance practices, and I would like to congratulate all our staff at all levels of the company who have helped make this achievement a reality,” he concluded.
The 2023 list is dominated by renewable energy players. Topping this year’s Top 50 is Innergex Renewable Energy, a Quebec-based clean energy company that operates 40 hydroelectric plants, 35 wind farms, 11 solar farms and an energy storage facility in Canada, the United States, France and Chile. The company has also continually improved its disclosure of environmental indicators, which has helped it rise to the top of the rankings.
Second place went to Brookfield Renewable Partners, the renewable energy platform of Brookfield Corporation, the former Brascan empire.
In third place is Hydro-Québec, which was the best company in 2022, 2021 and 2018. While the company has largely maintained last year’s sustainable revenues, the competition is getting fiercer as more and more renewable energy companies get ahead of the game.
