Mining Craftsman’s Day: Mechanisms to better organise and promote the sector in prospect

0

The second Mining Craftsman’s Day (Journée de l’artisan minier- JAM) will be held on 21 and 22 July 2023 in Gaoua. As a prelude to this event, the organising committee held a press conference on Thursday 13 July 2023 in Ouagadougou. With the theme “Artisanal mining: what mechanisms are needed to formalise operators in order to improve the socio-economic impact of the sector? the aim of JAM 2023 is to provide a framework for finding mechanisms to improve the organisation of the artisanal mining sector.

The JAM is “a genuine forum for expression and exchange between all the players in the artisanal and semi-mechanised mining value chain on the challenges linked to the organisation of this sub-sector and the promotion of good practice”, declared Jean Baptiste Kaboré, Secretary General of the Ministry in charge of mines and Chairman of the JAM organising committee.

According to the Chairman, efforts have been made over the years to provide a better framework for the sector, but it has to be said that difficulties persist in terms of compliance with regulations.

“The aim of the JAM is to bring about positive changes in the way artisanal sites are exploited, so that we have an organised and responsible artisanal mining sector”, he explains. In his view, the organisation of such an event demonstrates the government’s desire to clean up the artisanal mining sector by better structuring the players involved.

The press conference was an opportunity for the organising committee to confirm that the JAM will be held on 21 and 22 July 2023 in Gaoua, in the South-West region. According to the committee, the choice of the South-West region is explained by the fact that in recent years there has been a significant increase in artisanal mining and quarrying.

Mining Craftsmen’s Day was created by the government of Burkina Faso in 2022. It is intended as an annual meeting to promote good practice by recognising those who have made a positive contribution.
