Many papers were presented at the second edition of the Artisanal Miners’ Day (JAM 2023), held from 21 to 22 July 2023 in Gaoua on the central theme of “Artisanal mining: what mechanisms are needed to formalise operators in order to improve the socio-economic impact of the sector? ” Ms Thiombiano Annonciata, Secretary General of the Association of Women in the Mining Sector (Association des femmes du secteur minier – AFEMIB) gave a presentation on “The contribution of stakeholders to the formalisation of artisanal mining”. In essence, AFEMIB contributes to the promotion of the artisanal mining sector through awareness-raising and training for women on issues relating to artisanal mining. It supports the formalisation of women’s groups into associations and cooperatives. It participates in the activities of other players as part of the technical reinforcement and economic resilience of women artisanal miners.

AFEMIB has recruited a consultant to train 500 women and young people from 10 communes hosting mining sites in the professions of their choice. Following this activity, they will be supported in formalising their cooperatives.

In perspective, AFEMIB intends to set up a pilot site for responsible gold mining by women.
