The Association of Women in the Mining Sector of Burkina Faso (Association des Femmes du Secteur Minier du Burkina Faso – AFEMIB) has received an award in Abidjan. This is the “Support for women’s solidarity community projects” prize. The association’s technical adviser, Ms GUEMBRE / OUEDRAOGO Maïmouna, received the award.
Abidjan hosted the 2nd edition of its International Women Empowerment & Leadership Agora (#WELA) from 27 to 28 July 2023. The forum awarded 8 prizes to initiatives in the field of gender promotion. “AFEMIB took part in the selection process by presenting the various activities carried out between 2020 and 2022 as part of the implementation of its community projects for the benefit of women in gold mining communities,” the association said in a press release.
It was awarded first prize for its “Project to promote a social environment conducive to the integration of internally displaced women and the improvement of their living conditions in artisanal and small-scale mining communities in the Centre-Nord and Central Plateau regions”, according to the press release. The project involved building the capacity of 150 women, including 120 internally displaced women and 30 indigenous women, in income-generating activities, rice parboiling techniques, soumbala production, improved traditional poultry farming and small ruminant breeding.
In addition, the project has provided 100 women, including 80 internally displaced women and 20 indigenous women, with kits for income-generating activities in the area of their choice. “The project was implemented by the AFEMIB & ARM consortium and Support fund for innovative projects of civil society and stakeholder coalitions (projets innovants de la société civile et des coalitions d’acteurs – PISCCA) of the French Embassy in Burkina Faso from July to December 2022,” said AFEMIB.
AFEMIB expressed its deep gratitude to WELA and its selection committee for this recognition, which is a source of pride. It strengthens its determination to pursue its actions in favour of women in small-scale and artisanal mining.
