SOMISA (Sociétés des Mines de Sanbrado SA) launched its 2023 reforestation campaign at its Sanbrado facility in the commune of Boudri on 8 August 2023. The reforestation campaign is part of the company’s plan to rehabilitate the plant cover on its site.
On the sidelines of the final of the first edition of the SOMISA CEO Cup, SOMISA launched its reforestation campaign for 2023. The theme of the reforestation campaign was “Social cohesion and environmental protection”.
“We want each tree planted to symbolise the commitment of all of us to social cohesion, sustainable development and the preservation of the environment. We believe in a future where communities live in harmony with nature and where everyone plays an active role in promoting peace and preserving the environment,” said Christian Ouédraogo, SOMISA’s management representative.
For Water and Forests Commander Abdoul Kader Sawadogo, what SOMISA is doing in terms of rehabilitating plant cover is a very good thing, as it is far ahead of the game in environmental terms. He explains that the company has carried out activities in line with the policy of the ministry in charge of the environment. “We can say without reservation that they are already in line, as they say. What we saw with SOMISA, which began the site rehabilitation process while they were in operation, is an example, a textbook case. I invite other mining companies to come and learn from this example,” he said.

According to the High Commissioner for Ganzourgou Sorgho/Gouba Aminata, the actions that have been and are being carried out bear witness to SOMISA’s unwavering commitment to the cause of the environment. She believes that this reforestation campaign launch ceremony is not only a platform for training, but above all for raising awareness to improve natural heritage management.
“Over and above reforestation, we wanted to focus on social cohesion. We wanted to live in harmony with the local community,” said Christian Ouédraogo. According to Ouédraogo, this reforestation campaign consists of giving plants to the communities and reforesting the mine site.
For this campaign, 6000 plants have been distributed to the population for external reforestation and more than 13000 plants will be planted inside the mine site. In all, 27000 plants of 18 different species have been produced for 2023. These species were chosen in consultation with community members involved in off-site reforestation.
In addition, SOMISA has provided seedlings to resource persons, associations and cooperatives, as well as capacity building for young people from the affected areas.

The cost of producing plants in 2023 is 31,500,000 FCFA. The cost of the reforestation campaign is 5,700,000 FCFA. SOMISA estimates the survival rate of plants for this 2023 campaign at 80%.
