Artisanal and small-scale mining: Kinshasa hosts the forum

0

In a press release, the secretariat of the International Conference on the Great Lakes Region (ICGLR) and the government of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) inform the public about the regional forum on the implementation of the artisanal and small-scale gold mining strategy. The theme of the forum is: “A regional mineral monitoring system, a sustainable solution for a responsible artisanal gold trade in the Great Lakes region”, scheduled for 12 to 15 September 2023.

The artisanal and small-scale gold mining strategy was adopted in December 2018 at the 5th meeting of the International Conference on the Great Lakes Region (ICGLR) ministers responsible for mining, held in Brazzaville. Following its adoption, Kinshasa offered to organise and finance a regional forum on its implementation.

The general objective of this regional forum is to enable all stakeholders to take ownership of the strategy, and to discuss and agree on ways and means of implementing it effectively, with the emphasis on developing a coherent regional monitoring system. The strategy is implemented by the Member States in line with the guidelines of the ICGLR’s Regional Initiative against the Illegal Exploitation of Natural Resources.

National, regional and international stakeholders in the fight against the illegal exploitation of natural resources in the Great Lakes region are expected to attend this year’s event, including representatives of the CIRCL member states, regional organisations and mechanisms, representatives of the private sector and civil society, as well as regional and international partners.
