On 7 September 2023, the Chadian Minister of Mines and Geology, Abdelkerim Mahamat Abdelkerim, met with officials from the General Directorate of Geology. The purpose of the meeting was to take stock of progress in setting up the geological analysis laboratory and the ministry’s documentation.
“The laboratory is a prerequisite for moving towards industrialisation of the mining sector”, said Minister Abdelkerim Mahamat Abdelkerim. He also said that he was doing everything in his power to ensure that the laboratory was up and running within 2 months.
Ahmed Guett Gobaye, Secretary General of the Ministry of Mines, outlined the work to be carried out in the laboratory. These include: pre-installation work on the atomic absorption spectrometer, the installation of a specific electrical line for the operation of laboratory equipment, the acquisition of a Prolabo mobile host and the installation of the agent spectrometer by an expert from the manufacturer.
With regard to the installation of the spectrometer and the training of staff, steps are being taken to ensure the arrival of the expert who will install and train the laboratory staff in the use of this equipment.
In addition to the laboratory, there is also a documentation room. “I’m pleasantly surprised by all the documentation. In the near future, we are going to make available to the geology department, but also to other departments, units for setting up a database and making good use of them”, informed the Minister of Mines. With regard to the relocation of documentation, its reorganisation and accessibility to mining partners, the Secretary General said that the resources had been made available to the Directorate General of Geology to make this a reality. Minister Abdelkerim Mahamat Abdelkerim expressed his satisfaction with the professional work carried out by the staff. “I have just visited the laboratory, which will soon be up and running as we move towards industrialisation and the modernisation of the sector (…) the laboratory is in a very significant state of progress,” he said.
