Mauritania’s Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative (EITI) published its 2022 report on 14 October 2023. Drawn up by an independent administrator, the report details the types of minerals and quantities produced by the 3 companies operating in Mauritania.
The minerals produced in Mauritania are gold, copper, iron and silver. Three mining companies exploit these resources: Tasiast Mauritania Limited SA (TMLSA), Mauritania Copper Mines SA (MCM) and Société Nationale Industrielle et Minière (SNIM).
The EITI 2022 report states that gold production in 2022 was higher than in 2021 due to the resumption of activities at the TMLSA mining company, which had shut down following a fire.
Industrial gold production has risen from over 5 tonnes in 2021 to over 16 tonnes in 2022. Artisanal gold production in 2022 will be more than 2 tonnes.
On the other hand, copper production has fallen. It will fall from more than 18 tonnes in 2021 to more than 13 tonnes in 2022, a drop of 29%.
Iron production reached over 13 million tonnes.
