In Mauritania, the mining sector employs very few people. These are the findings of the Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative (EITI) 2022 report, published on 14 October 2023.
“The mining sector directly employs 9,165 people, 93.58% of whom are men (8,576) and 6.42% women (589), with 1% expatriates,” according to Mauritania’s EITI 2022 report. The 9,165 direct jobs represent 0.98% of the working population.
The latter are all employed by MCM and TMLSA, SNIM having no expatriate employees in accordance with Mauritanian regulations.
The number of employees at TMLSA will rise to 1,415 in 2022, 98% of whom will be Mauritanian and 70% of all managerial staff, compared with 56% in 2020. The number of expatriates working at the mine has fallen from nearly 200 in 2012 to 48 in 2022 (including 25 trainers and employees of the plant extension project). The Mauritanian plan provides for a maximum of 27 expatriates, leaving 4 positions to be filled. In terms of subcontractor employees, in 2022 TMLSA had 2,208 nationals and 230 expatriates (including the expansion project). All subcontractors with more than 8 expatriate employees are required to submit a Mauritanisation plan. Beyond the Mauritanisation process completed in 2019, TMLSA has recruited 276 additional Mauritanian units by 2022. Emphasis has been placed on training, with 2,300 mobile maintenance employees benefiting during 2022. More than 250 women work at TMLSA (Tasiast) in various disciplines, from truck drivers to senior managers. In 2022, TMLSA created the Tasiast Women’s Committee to help identify initiatives that improve working conditions for women and increase the attractiveness of working at the mine for female candidates.
