Mali: Building the capacity of local suppliers to meet the international requirements of the mining sector

0

Mali’s Ministry of Mines has organised a capacity-building workshop for local mining suppliers. The aim of the workshop was to enable local suppliers in the mining sector to familiarise themselves with international requirements in order to satisfy mining companies.

Mali is at a turning point in its socio-economic development, and the extractive sector is expected to make a considerable contribution. Over the past 10 years, the mining sector has contributed an average of more than 400 billion FCFA to the state budget, according to the government’s Facebook page.

“Given the opportunities offered by the mining industry in the supply of various goods and services, building the capacity of economic operators to meet the requirements of mining companies could pave the way for the emergence of a class of local entrepreneurs fully integrated into the economy of Mali’s mining areas. This opportunity could also provide a viable alternative for youth employment in these areas”, explained Minister Keita.

According to the government, this requires a greater presence of nationals in the mining industry, in line with the new directions taken by the transitional authorities.

Initiated by the Mining Sector Governance Project, the aim of the training is to enable participants to understand management systems and, above all, to familiarise themselves with international requirements in terms of quality, the environment, health and safety at work, and social and corporate responsibility.

The knowledge acquired during the workshop will enable them to provide mining companies with high-quality products and services that meet the requirements of national and international standards.

As a reminder, the Malian government’s new mining policy aims to further integrate the mining sector into the national economy and maximise the benefits for the people.
