From 30 November to 12 December 2023, the Government of the United Arab Emirates will host the 28th Conference of the Parties to the UNFCCC (COP 28), with the aim of building on the outcomes of COP27 and accelerating action to address the climate emergency. The International EITI will participate in the climate conference to highlight the essential role of transparency and accountability in the energy and mining sectors in achieving the goals of the Paris Agreement.

The International EITI will host debates on a number of topics, including :

  • “A call to action for transparency and accountability in the renewable energy sector”. At this EITI side event, organised jointly with the Mauritanian government, speakers will call for action on transparency and accountability in the renewable energy sector and highlight the practical steps governments are taking to support the sustainable growth of the renewable energy sector.
  • “Strengthening energy governance for a just energy transition”. This event is organised in partnership with the UNDP and the UNFCCC. It will explore why good governance and collective action are important to ensure a just energy transition. Speakers will discuss emerging governance risks in the energy sector and practical steps that governments, industry and civil society can take to strengthen governance and promote transparency and accountability for a just energy transition. Best governance practices will also be shared to identify, manage and address the negative socio-economic impacts of the energy transition. The event will present the UNDP’s energy governance framework for a just energy transition and the EITI’s call to action for transparency and accountability in the renewable energy sector, as well as the results of recent research and analysis carried out by the two organisations.
  • “Sustainable Minerals Supply for the Energy Transition: Why Responsible Mining Matters?”. This EITI side event, organised jointly with ICMM and the Government of the Philippines, will explore why responsible mining is important for a just transition.
