Mining sector: Achievements and innovations presented by the Prime Minister to the Transitional Legislative Assembly

0

In his presentation on the state of the nation to the Transitional Legislative Assembly (l’Assemblée législative de Transition – ALT) on 1 December 2023, Prime Minister Apollinaire Kyelem de Tambéla touched on his government’s highlights and innovations for the mining sector.

In terms of achievements, he noted the review of the 2015 Mining Code, which, he said, should best protect Burkina Faso’s interests. The Prime Minister also mentioned the laying of the foundation stone for a gold refinery in Burkina Faso, and the establishment of the National Company for the Exploitation of Precious Substances (Société Nationale pour l’Exploitation des Substances précieuses – SONASP).

On the subject of innovation, the head of government hinted that a tailings processing unit will be set up. “Before long, fine coal will be processed on site. This will create jobs and put an end to the fraud or suspicions of fraud surrounding the processing of these residues”, he argued. As part of the promotion of local mining, he explained that of the 21 new small-scale mining projects brought on stream, 06 advanced geological and mining research projects are now owned by national investors.

In his quest for quality and competence in the sector, Apollinaire Kyelem pointed out that mining companies such as Perkoa, Guiro, Yéou and Kalsaka have had their operating licences withdrawn for reasons of default. At the same time, he noted that an extractive industry would soon be created in the south-west region.
