The mining company Iamgold Essakane organised a day in honour of its employees and their families on Saturday 2 December 2023 in Ouagadougou. Called “Family day 2023”, the aim of the day was to bring together employees from different departments so that they can get to know each other better.

“Essakane is a family. We often say that our primary resource is not gold, but our employees. We work together and we build relationships. But it’s a good thing that at times we can take a break to meet up with our colleagues and our families, to build greater cohesion, and also take advantage of these moments to celebrate our employees who are retiring,” said Tidiane Barry, Managing Director of Essakane.

According to him, the organisation of this day is important because if this company is one of the most successful and largest in the country, it is because there are men and women who are committed to the company, he said. “We are organising a family day, in other words, we are allowing families to get together and celebrate”, he said.
Through this activity, Essakane wants to move towards the end of the year in health and safety by celebrating its achievements and by celebrating the men and women who have enabled it to get to this stage, so that they can continue this great mining story.
Williams Ouédraogo, Director of Human Resources at Essakane, said that this family day was a way for the company to say thank you to its employees and their families for their contribution to the company’s results. He also explained that this event was an opportunity to celebrate the 21 employees who had retired. They received certificates of recognition for their many years of service to the company.
“After so many years together, we think it’s a good idea to talk about the Iamgold family in general and the Essakane family in particular. Admittedly, the separation is difficult, but it’s only goodbye,” said Théophile Dahourou, the retirees’ representative.
For Thérèse Tiendrebéogo, employee representative, this family get-together is also an opportunity for the different nuclear families and employees to get to know each other, to rub shoulders and to share moments of conviviality around their company, which recognises that each employee is its primary resource. She adds that this activity is unique and that it helps to strengthen social cohesion and promote well-being.
In addition, the Managing Director of Essakane promised the employees that this event would be organised every year instead of every 5 years.
In addition to the various speeches, the day’s programme included visits to stands, meals and performances by artists.
