Côte d’Ivoire: Government and traditional chiefs unite against illegal gold mining

Côte d’Ivoire’s Minister of Mines, Petroleum and Energy, Mamadou Sangafowa-Coulibaly, held a working session with the country’s traditional chiefs on Friday 08 December 2023 at the Chamber of Kings and Traditional Chiefs in Yamoussoukro. According to a press release issued by the communication department of the Côte d’Ivoire Ministry of Mines, Petroleum and Energy, the purpose of the meeting was to inform and seek the advice and blessing of the traditional authorities on the awareness campaign against illegal gold panning.

Chaired by Amon Tanoé Paul Désiré (king of the N’Zima-Kotoko), this meeting between the minister and the traditional chiefs aimed to explain to the latter the consequences of illegal gold panning and to raise their awareness so that they can act as intermediaries with the gold miners.

Addressing the traditional chiefs, the minister outlined the current situation with regard to illegal gold panning and the need to implement a strategy.

Finally, the minister defined the role of traditional authorities in the fight against illegal gold mining.

At the end of the meeting, Minister Mamadou Sangafowa-Coulibaly expressed his satisfaction with the content of the discussions with the traditional chiefs.

He also listened to the traditional authorities to understand their expectations and propose solutions to combat this scourge.

The exchanges were rich and the kings and chiefs gave their agreement to support this fight.
