Cameroon: soon a revolutionary gold mine

Cameroon’s Acting Minister of Mines, Industry and Technological Development, Fuh Calistus, visited the Colomine gold mine on Tuesday 12 December 2023. This official visit is part of the launch of the second phase of the Carbon-in-Leach project, an innovative gold processing system.

According to a press release issued by the communications department of Cameroon’s Ministry of Mines, Industry and Technological Development, the minister visited the mine to see the progress of work to install the modern gold processing system, now in its second phase. This is a Carbon-in-Leach gold mining project, a leach processing system that treats gold ore in a closed system.

The advantages of this leaching treatment procedure are environmental protection, as effluents (liquid waste) are no longer discharged into the environment. It also increases the metal yield from 30 to 90%, and enhances the safety of personnel around the site.

By adopting this new operating system, the Colomine gold site (operated by COMINCOR /CODIAS S.A) becomes the first in Central Africa. According to the Cameroonian online site Invertir au Cameroun, the mine is scheduled to come on stream in 2024, with a potential output of more than 480,000 tonnes of gold.

Covering an area of 309 km2, the Colomine gold mine is located in the Ngoura district of the East region. The project is being carried out by Codias SA, which has held the exploration permit for the mine site since 5 January 2017.
