Norwegian company Scatec plans to install 02 solar power plants in the northern part of Cameroon. The announcement was made on 13 December 2023 by Release, a subsidiary through which Scatec has obtained financing for the project.
2 solar power plants of 20 and 30 MW will be built in Cameroon. The actual implementation of the 2 projects is currently under discussion with the government of Cameroon.
Scatec made this announcement after obtaining financing of more than 60 billion FCFA from the International Finance Corporation (IFC).
This project should enable Scatec to reinforce its status as a pioneer and leader in solar energy in Cameroon. Indeed, the company has already installed solar power plants in Maroua and Guider. These plants were inaugurated in September 2023 by Cameroon’s Minister of Water and Energy, Gaston Eloundou Essomba.
At the time, Minister Gaston Eloundou Essomba suggested that the inauguration of the Maroua and Guider solar power plants had led to the shutdown of the thermal power plants previously used to boost production in this part of the country, thereby generating budget savings for the State.
These power stations represent the very first large-scale solar power project in Cameroon, a country largely dominated by hydroelectricity.
