On 28 December 2023, the acting Minister of Mines, Industry and Technological Development, Fuh Calistus Gentry, and the Cameroonian Minister of Transport, Jean Ernest Masséna Ngallè Bibéhè, took part in a ceremony in Beijing, China, to launch the integrated iron ore mining project for Avima, Badondo, Nabeba and Mbalam (localities in Cameroon), as well as the construction of the Mbalam-Kribi railway and the mineral terminal at the Port of Kribi in Cameroon.
The launch of these projects will be a source of jobs and economic spin-offs for Cameroon, Congo Brazzaville and China.
The construction of the railway linking Mbalam to Kribi, as well as the mineral terminal, will not only facilitate the transport of more than 100 million tonnes of iron ore per year, but will also generate more than 20,000 direct and indirect jobs, as well as more than 20,000 billion FCFA in tax benefits between Cameroon and China.
What’s more, the railway network, 140 km long on the Congolese side and 540 km long on the Cameroonian side, is a major step forward in the mining sector and will further strengthen the economic and cultural links between Cameroon and Congo.
The ceremony to launch these projects was attended by a delegation led by the Congolese Minister of State for Mining and Geology, Pierre Oba, the Cameroonian ambassador to China, and representatives of more than a dozen Chinese companies involved in implementing the project.
Construction work is due to start in 2024.
