Between 2017 and 2021, the extractive sector in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) employed a total of 665,501 people, according to data from the National Employment Office (Office National de l’Emploi – ONEM) in the Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative (EITI-DRC) Report for 2020-2021. The detailed statistics show a large number of nationals employed in the sector.

Of the 665,501 people employed by the extractive sector in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), 624,185 (or 93.70%) are Congolese and 41,316 foreigners. Employment statistics for the 2017-2021 period show a growth in numbers, with the exception of 2020. The drop in 2020 is due to the effects of the Covid-19 pandemic, which reduced activity in many sectors. Of the 665,501 employees in the mining sector, 81,774 are women (12.20%), including 8,164 Congolese women and 610 foreigners.
