Senegal: Transparency International on the trail of a 270 billion FCFA transaction

0

270 billion FCFA is the total amount of transactions between Barrick Gold and Sabodala Gold Operations (SGO) and the Senegalese state. The Forum Civil, the Senegalese section of Transparency International in Senegal, denounced the situation. In a press release issued on Friday 19 January 2024, the Forum questioned the legality of the transactions.

Of the 270 billion FCFA, Barrick Gold has settled for 120 billion FCFA and Sabodala Gold Operations (SGO) for 150 billion FCFA. These transactions relate to Public Interest Litigation concerning Barrick Gold and Sabodala Gold Operations.

In its press release, the Forum Civil noted the silence of the current Minister of Finance and Budget, Mamadou Moustapha Ba, and of Abdoulaye Daouda Diallo, Minister of Finance and Budget, at the time of the adjustment made to the Barrick Gold company. As a reminder, on 11 January 2024, the Forum had already published a statement on the subject. In its statement, the Forum Civil said it had referred the matter to the National Anti-Fraud and Corruption Office (Office national de lutte contre la Fraude et la Corruption – OFNAC) in order to obtain clarification on the legality of the transactions between the State and the two companies, and also to find out whether the interests of the State and taxpayers had been protected.
